Do I use Common Application or the College Specific Application?

Monarch Tips for using Common Application

How to register for the Common App and link up to Naviance:
  1. From Naviance click on “Common Application”
  2. Set up your Common Application account – be very careful about which email and password you create – it MUST match what you enter in Naviance (later)
  3. Complete the FERPA waiver from within your Common App account by clicking the FERPA button. The FERPA waiver is only completed once and covers all current and future colleges and recommenders. You can only see the FERPA button once you add at least one school to your account.
  4. You will want to waive your rights to see your recommendations, and give permission for the school to send your records and recommendations.
  5. Go back to your “colleges I’m applying to page” and enter your Common App email address and click on “match”
  6. Your Common Applications are now linked to Naviance.  Make sure colleges listed on your “Applying To” page are also listed in your Common Application schools.
  7. Be sure to answer “applying via Common App?” next to each school listed on your applying to page. You must answer “yes” in order for Naviance to link that school to Common App
Common Application’s “Help Center” has loads of helpful information to guide you through each step of the Common App and is manned 24 hours a day.

Tips and Reminders when using Common Apps
  • You will need at least one, possibly more than one, teacher recommendation for Common App schools, so plan accordingly (see Monarch Letter of Recommendation Process). Each college will tell you how many teacher recommendations they want. Do not do more or less than what is requested.
  • Teachers must upload letter of recommendation, and also fill out the Common App Teacher Eval.
  • You may need a counselor letter of recommendation for Common App schools, so plan accordingly (see Monarch Letter of Recommendation Process).
  • Counselors will attach their letter to the “Secondary School Report.”
  • All pieces of the Common App from the school are sent at the same time: Teacher Evaluation and Recommendation, Counselor Recommendation with the Secondary School Report, Transcript, and School Profile.
