Letter or Recommendations: Step-by-Step

Need help requesting your Letter or Recommendation? Check out this video from Naviance.

Viewing Tips:
1. Click the full screen view to see details more easily

2. When the screen shows 3 options, click 1 option to continue

Step 1

Check the applications of your prospective schools to see if they require teacher/counselor letters of recommendation.
  • Do not ask for or send more letters than are required by each school.

Step 2

In Naviance, complete the Teacher Letter of Rec form and, if needed, the Counselor Letter of Recommendation form found under the“About Me” tab.
  • In addition, ask your parent/guardian to brag about you by filling out the Parent Brag Sheet.

Step 3

Update Naviance by including the college in your “Colleges I’m Applying To” page.
  • Make note of “delivery type” for each school (mail, edoc, CommonApp).
  • All Common Application schools require one to two Teacher Letters of Rec along with the Teacher Evaluation and Counselor supplements including the Secondary School Report.

Step 4

Ask teacher/counselor for a letter of recommendation
  • Go to your “colleges I’m applying to” page
  • Scroll down to “Teacher Recommendations”
  • Click on “add/cancel requests”
  • Select a teacher from the drop down menu
  • Write a personal note in the space provided - include the schools you are applying to, when you would like it by (allow 3 – 4 weeks), and let them know you will check in with them personally in the next few days.
  • In person, confirm they are able to write one for you, the date they can have it done, and how it will be delivered.

Step 5

Submit letter(s) of recommendation (or check with your teachers to be sure they have been submitted)
  • Pick up a paper copy only for schools that require mailed transcripts and recommendations. You are responsible for mailing them or providing the teacher with a stamped/addressed envelope for each institution.
  • For Edoc and Common App, the teacher will upload their letter into Naviance (with Common App teachers will also complete the Teacher Evaluation).
